In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the world, forcing many galleries and museums to close. In response, presentations of artworks using remote communication tools such as Zoom increased. At the same time, the development of Non-Fungible Token (NFT) led to a rise in the perceived value of digital data, prompting many artists to present their works online.

In this context, the art scene appears to have become increasingly borderless, entering the space of the internet. What particularly draws my attention is social media, which can easily function as a platform for expression for anyone. I myself regularly upload and view photographs and videos on these platforms.

However, I began to question how contemporary viewers engage with sound on social media. Today, it is taken for granted that videos include sound, yet it often seems that sound is treated as secondary. Another issue with digital media is that the way a work is seen or heard varies depending on the quality of the viewer’s device. Unlike galleries and museums, where works can be experienced under relatively equal conditions, viewing through the internet introduces disparities shaped by individual devices.

In response to this situation, I post works on Instagram that combine still images with 15 to 30 seconds of sound recorded on site. By presenting these works within the rapid flow of information characteristic of social media, I attempt to reveal the casual and often careless treatment of sound.

This is an ongoing project, developed through continuous posting.
