Takuya Matsuura

 

Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1991, I completed my studies at the Graduate School of Media Art and Design at Nagoya University of Arts and Sciences. Since my time as a student, I have been creating and researching works that visualize sound and light as waves, using photography. While working as an assistant at the university, engaging in video education, I have continued my artistic production. I have actively expanded my activities, including receiving the Excellence Award in Canon's 2016 New Cosmos of Photography. Since 2017, I have been hosting "Night Developing," a project under the "sonicphotogram project," which combines music events and photography workshops. I am currently based in Berlin, Germany.

Many contemporary works of art are composed beyond the boundaries of various media, and this applies to works that deal with photography as well. Is a digitally processed photograph considered CG? Should the images output to a display or projected by a projector be called video works that go beyond the realm of still images? Is photography limited to prints on paper media? Today, the definition of photography is quite ambiguous, and it can be said to be a medium that transcends various fields.

In my creative process, I use the methodology of "via photographic media" as a foundation. I believe that there is potential for new forms of expression in works that combine photography and sound, free from the conventional concept of "photograph," and that the combination of both media offers a promising area for future development.
